(universal mobile telecommunications system)L’UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) est un standard de téléphonie mobile 3G (de 3e génération). Ce standard de transmission radio-électrique permet d’acheminer les données numériques (voix, texte, multimédia et vidéo) des ordinateurs et appareils cellulaires (téléphones portables, smartphones) avec un débit théorique de 384 Kbps (kilobits par seconde) et un débit effectif de 250 Kbps, qui pourrait passer ensuite à 1 puis 2 Mbps (mégabits par seconde). L’UMTS permet par exemple la visiophonie sur appareil mobile, la participation à une visioconférence, la diffusion de contenus vidéo et le transfert de fichiers volumineux. Après plusieurs reports de date, les grands opérateurs de téléphonie mobile (T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange, etc.) lancent en 2004 leurs premières offres commerciales 3G (appareil + abonnement) utilisant l’UMTS. A partir de 2007, le débit de l’UMTS peut être accéléré au moyen de la technologie HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access), qui permet d’atteindre un débit de 3,6 Mbps. -
